About Genevieve Murphy

A highly accomplished composer and performer, Amsterdam-based Genevieve Murphy combines performance and visual art with contemporary classical music. After studying at the Royal Conservatoire in her native Glasgow, followed by the Birmingham Conservatoire for her Bachelor of Music, she received a Masters in Composition at The Royal Conservatory in The Hague. Alongside a celebrated body of solo work, Murphy has collaborated and performed with a wide range of visual artists, choreographers and producers, including the Turner Prize-winning artist Martin Creed, and a series of commissioned performances with the neuropsychologist Professor Erik Scherder.

About the work

Genevieve Murphy presents a new composition entitled 'In Turn We Spin' exclusively for Rewire 2021, as part of Music For A Busy City online. It is a composition made for the revolving doors of the iconic De Bijenkorf department store at Grote Marktstraat. Each section of the revolving door has its own musical voice. These voices can be listened to in isolation, when entering the revolving door, or as a composition; listening from a distance.

Lyrics

Sometimes
Perhaps it’s necessary
Perhaps it’s not necessary
I sleep through a night
Completely awake
The hours pass unlike the day
Hours of voices finally being heard
Like birds that need to sing at night because the city is too loud
I have created a world where my thoughts have no choice but to take their space
Under the moon
I’m not talking about dreams
I’m not talking about being tolerant
Often my thoughts find the volume pedal when something is unresolved
Around and around I think about how to fix it
What tool do I need? What colour will that tool be? Does it sound like wood or metal?
Perhaps it’s necessary
To say ‘hi’
Perhaps there is something crucial in my thoughts that I am oppressing
What makes it think I will tolerate it more when I actually really want to just sleep
I finally give up and just listen
Each night is unpredictable
To think
That
At times
I don’t even know that something is unresolved
It takes hours for me to tell myself
Looping
Finally I think ‘perhaps it’s because I need to write something down’
So I imagine that I’m about to write lyrics for a song
Then, each thought takes its turn
Finding it’s place within
De Bijenkorf
